In most cases, the PCT patent application is the first step towards protecting your invention internationally. In cases in which an applicant will only be pursuing protection in one or two international markets, it might be more cost effective to skip the PCT application and go straight to national patent applications in those countries. However, in many situations the PCT is an effective tool for maintaining your rights to protect your invention while postponing the more significant investments required for multiple national patent applications.
